Officials of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) at the University of Nairobi have criticised the government over what they describe as declining standards at the institution due to inadequate funding.

Speaking during a press briefing, UASU University of Nairobi Chapter Secretary George Osanjo, flanked by Chapter Chairman Dr. Ben Nyamchoga and Chapter Treasurer Wainaina Githii, accused the Ministry of Education  and the National Treasury of failing to allocate sufficient resources to support the university’s operations.

Osanjo said the financial constraints have significantly affected the institution’s ability to deliver quality education, maintain infrastructure, and support research activities.

He warned that continued underfunding could further erode the university’s standing as one of the country’s leading institutions of higher learning.

The union officials expressed concern that key departments are struggling to function effectively due to budgetary limitations, with some programmes facing the risk of disruption.

They noted that delays in the disbursement of funds have compounded the situation, making it difficult for the university to meet its financial obligations.

According to the union, the funding gap has also affected staff welfare, including delays in salary payments and limited support for academic development.

Osanjo said lecturers are increasingly frustrated, as they are expected to deliver quality outcomes despite the challenging conditions.

Dr. Nyamchoga emphasised the need for urgent intervention by the government, warning that failure to address the issue could have long-term consequences for the education sector.

He said universities play a critical role in national development and should be adequately supported to fulfil their mandate.

Githii added that the current situation is unsustainable and called for a comprehensive review of university funding models.

He urged the government to prioritise higher education in budget allocations to ensure institutions can operate efficiently and competitively.

The union also raised concerns about the state of infrastructure at the university, noting that some facilities are deteriorating due to lack of maintenance.

They said this not only affects the learning environment but also poses safety risks to students and staff.

UASU officials called on the Ministry of Education and the National Treasury to engage stakeholders in finding lasting solutions to the funding challenges.

They stressed the importance of dialogue in addressing the concerns raised by academic staff and ensuring that universities remain centres of excellence.
