Anglican Bishop Charles Ong’injo has delivered a sharp rebuke to Members of Parliament (MPs) attending a burial ceremony in Seme, Kisumu County, urging them to abandon political slogans and focus on pressing national challenges affecting ordinary Kenyans.

Speaking on Saturday, May 2, 2026, during the burial of Mzee Eliud Nyikal Okaka, the father of Seme Member of Parliament James Nyikal, Bishop Ong’injo long-term sustainability.

According to the programme, beneficiaries will receive piglets to start or expand pig farming projects, with the expectation that they will use available local and regional markets to sell pork and related products.

County officials say pig farming has been identified as one of the fastest-growing agribusiness opportunities in the region, largely due to its relatively short production cycle, high reproduction rate, and consistent demand in both urban and rural markets.

The initiative targets youth groups, small-scale farmers, and households interested in diversifying their income sources.

By lowering the initial cost of entry through provision of starter stock, the programme is expected to encourage more residents to participate in livestock farming.

Agriculture officers in the county have also been tasked with providing basic training and technical support to beneficiaries, including guidance on animal health, feeding practices, and market access.

This is aimed at improving survival rates of the piglets and ensuring the ventures become commercially viable.

Officials further noted that pig farming has the potential to transform livelihoods, especially among young people facing limited formal employment opportunities.

With proper management, they say, farmers can begin generating returns within a few months, making it an attractive option compared to some traditional livestock enterprises.

The county government has also emphasised the importance of value addition, encouraging farmers to explore processing and cooperative marketing to maximise profits.

This includes linking farmers to buyers and supporting the development of structured supply chains within the livestock sector.

Residents who have benefited from similar agribusiness programmes in the past have reported improved household incomes and greater financial stability, prompting the county to scale up its support for livestock-based projects.

Officials believe that strengthening grassroots agribusiness initiatives will not only improve household incomes but also contribute to food security and local economic growth.
