The protests, which began earlier in the day, escalated by afternoon as more than 100 riders converged on the road, rendering parts of the route impassable.
Motorists, commuters, and public transport operators were forced to seek alternative routes as congestion quickly spread to nearby feeder roads.
Witnesses reported long traffic snarl-ups stretching across sections connecting Westlands, Parklands, and surrounding areas, with movement slowing significantly as the demonstrations intensified.
The boda boda operators were initially spotted in Westlands earlier in the day, riding in groups toward Nairobi’s Central Business District before gathering along Limuru Road.
The riders were protesting what they described as persistent harassment and crackdowns by county government enforcement officers.
According to some of the operators, county askaris had allegedly intensified operations targeting boda boda riders, leading to confrontations, confiscation of motorcycles, and claims of unfair treatment.
The demonstrations appeared aimed at drawing attention to their grievances while pressuring authorities to address their concerns.
Images circulating online showed hundreds of people gathered along the road, with motorcycles parked across sections of the highway as crowds milled around chanting and waving at passing pedestrians.
Notably, very few vehicles could be seen moving through the affected stretch during the peak of the protests.
The blockade significantly disrupted movement along Limuru Road, one of Nairobi’s most strategic transport corridors.
The route serves as a key link between Nairobi’s Central Business District, the diplomatic and residential zones of Gigiri, and the wider Kiambu region, which includes rapidly growing residential estates and agricultural zones.
The road is heavily used by private motorists, public service vehicles, delivery trucks, and commuters travelling between Nairobi and surrounding counties.
Monday’s disruption therefore had an immediate ripple effect on transport operations and business activity within the city.
Commuters caught in the congestion expressed frustration over delayed movement, with some forced to walk long distances after matatus and taxis struggled to navigate the affected areas.
Businesses located along adjacent routes also experienced delays as transport systems slowed down.
By late afternoon, police officers had reportedly been deployed to monitor the situation and manage traffic around nearby junctions as authorities sought to restore normal movement along the road.
