The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued Improvement Notices to two Nairobi-based businesses after routine inspections uncovered serious violations of environmental and safety regulations.

The affected facilities, Kenrom Chemicals Ltd and the Kayole Slaughterhouse, were cited during inspections carried out by NEMA enforcement officers in the Industrial Area and Kayole on May 27.

According to the environmental agency, the operation formed part of its ongoing compliance monitoring aimed at ensuring businesses adhere to Kenya’s environmental protection laws and public safety standards.

“NEMA environmental inspectors yesterday carried out routine checks in Nairobi’s Industrial Area and Kayole and issued Improvement Notices to two facilities,” the authority said in a statement.

Kenrom Chemicals Ltd was found to be in violation of the Management of Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals and Materials Regulations 2024, which outlines the handling, storage, transportation, and disposal requirements for dangerous substances.

Inspectors reportedly identified gaps in the company’s compliance with the regulations, raising concerns over the potential environmental and health risks posed by improper handling of hazardous materials.

The authority did not immediately disclose the exact nature of the violations but noted that Improvement Notices are issued to compel facilities to correct identified shortcomings within a specified timeframe.

Failure to comply with such directives may result in stricter enforcement action, including penalties, suspension of operations, or prosecution under environmental laws.

The Kayole Slaughterhouse was also flagged during the inspection exercise over alleged breaches of environmental and public health standards.

Authorities indicated that the facility had operational deficiencies that required urgent corrective action to ensure compliance with environmental management requirements.

The latest enforcement action highlights increasing scrutiny by NEMA on businesses operating in sectors considered high-risk for environmental pollution and public health concerns.

Industrial operations involving chemicals, waste disposal, and food processing are among areas frequently targeted by inspectors due to their potential impact on surrounding communities and ecosystems if regulations are ignored.
