Police have arrested three suspects following a crackdown led by the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) targeting the illegal distribution of copyrighted content in Nairobi.

The operation, conducted in Kware, Embakasi, also led to the recovery of several broadcasting devices believed to have been used in unlawful transmission activities.

Authorities seized decoders, amplifiers, cables, and other equipment suspected to have facilitated illegal broadcasting and distribution of copyrighted material.

According to officials involved in the operation, the suspects are believed to have been operating an unauthorized distribution network that infringed on intellectual property rights by retransmitting protected content without permission from rights holders.

The raid forms part of ongoing efforts by KECOBO and law enforcement agencies to curb digital piracy and protect creators, broadcasters, and media companies from revenue losses associated with illegal content distribution.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the equipment recovered was used to capture and redistribute pay television and other licensed broadcasts to unauthorized users in the area.

Authorities say such operations not only violate copyright laws but also undermine the creative and broadcasting industries.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be processed further as investigations continue.

Officials have indicated that more arrests may follow as detectives work to dismantle the network believed to be behind the illegal activity.

KECOBO has in recent months intensified enforcement actions across different parts of the country in response to rising cases of signal theft and unauthorized content sharing, which have become a growing concern for broadcasters and content producers.

Law enforcement agencies have also warned individuals and businesses involved in piracy that they risk prosecution under Kenya’s copyright laws, which provide for penalties including fines and imprisonment upon conviction.

Residents of Kware, Embakasi, were reportedly taken by surprise during the early morning operation, which involved coordinated action by police officers and KECOBO enforcement teams.

The seized equipment was taken away for further forensic examination and evidence processing.

Authorities have urged members of the public to comply with intellectual property laws and to report suspected cases of piracy to the relevant agencies.

They have also encouraged consumers to access content through licensed platforms to support the growth of the creative industry.
