Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo has emphasised the importance of intense electoral contests.

This follows a meeting between Amollo and his former rivals for the Rarieda parliamentary seat, including Augustine Neto Adhola, commonly known as Capt. Neto, who currently serves as the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development in Siaya County, as well as Advocate Isaiah Munje.

Taking to his official X account on Sunday, May 24, 2026, Amollo said the engagement was cordial and reflected the importance of maintaining respect and unity among leaders despite past political competition.

He noted that their discussions were constructive and centred on the need for political actors to recognise that elections should never be a source of long-term division within communities.

Amollo stressed that political rivalry should remain grounded in ideas, policies and democratic choice, rather than hostility or personal animosity that often lingers after elections.

He warned against the tendency for divisions to persist beyond the campaign period, saying such rifts weaken community cohesion and undermine collective progress.

According to him, leaders have a responsibility to demonstrate maturity by engaging respectfully with their opponents once elections are concluded, regardless of the outcome.

The legislator further underscored that democracy thrives when competing ideas are freely presented to the electorate, allowing voters to make informed choices without intimidation or conflict.

He added that peaceful coexistence among political competitors sets a strong example for supporters, helping to reduce tensions at the grassroots level where political divisions are often deeply felt.

The meeting between Amollo and his former challengers is being viewed as a symbolic gesture of reconciliation, highlighting the possibility of cooperation among leaders who were once fierce political opponents.

Observers note that such engagements are increasingly important in promoting stability and unity, especially in regions where political competition has historically been intense.

Amollo reiterated that leadership should be anchored on service delivery and respect for differing views, rather than continued rivalry after electoral outcomes are determined.

His remarks come at a time when political leaders across the country are being called upon to foster dialogue and tolerance ahead of future elections.

He concluded by reaffirming that unity among leaders and communities remains essential for development, urging politicians to prioritise peace and mutual respect as a foundation for governance and public service.
