President William Ruto has pledged to resolve long-standing land ownership disputes in the Coast region through an expanded title deed issuance programme aimed at securing land rights for thousands of residents.

Speaking during a public event held at Mama Ngina Drive in Mombasa on Thursday, May 21, 2026, the Head of State announced that more than 33,000 title deeds had been issued to residents across the Coast region.

The President said the exercise forms part of the government’s broader plan to address historical land injustices that have affected many families in the region for decades.

Taking to his X account after the event, Ruto said the government had already begun processing an additional 200,000 title deeds that are expected to be distributed within the next 90 days.

“At Mama Ngina Drive in Mombasa County, we issued more than 33,000 title deeds to Coast residents.

We are now processing an additional 200,000 title deeds in different parts of the Coast, which will be delivered within the next 90 days, benefiting more than one million residents,” Ruto stated.

The President noted that the programme is intended to provide residents with legal ownership documents, enhance security of tenure and unlock economic opportunities tied to land ownership.

For years, land ownership disputes have remained a major concern in the Coast region, with many families living on ancestral land without formal ownership documents.

The issue has frequently sparked complaints from residents, leaders and activists who have called for government intervention to address historical injustices and irregular land allocations.

Ruto said the government remains committed to ensuring that more residents acquire title deeds as part of efforts to promote social and economic stability in the region.

The issuance of title deeds is also expected to ease land-related disputes, improve access to credit facilities and encourage investment among local communities.

Leaders who attended the event welcomed the move, describing it as a significant step towards addressing a challenge that has persisted for generations.
