President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to arrive in Kenya for a major Africa–France summit at a time when diplomatic attention between Nairobi and Abuja remains shaped by recent online tensions sparked by remarks from President William Ruto.

Tinubu will travel to Nairobi after a stop in France as part of a three-nation tour that also includes Rwanda. In Kenya, he will attend the Africa–France Summit scheduled for May 11–12, 2026.

The meeting will bring together African leaders and French officials to discuss energy transition, climate action, digital growth, and reforms to global financial systems.

The summit will be co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and President Ruto, placing Kenya at the centre of a key dialogue between the continent and Europe.

In a statement dated Friday, May 1, 2026, the Nigerian presidency said Tinubu’s participation will “underscore Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships with African nations and the French Republic.”

The statement added that he will use the platform to promote Nigeria’s economic reform agenda and attract investment.

Tinubu’s visit comes at a sensitive moment in Kenya–Nigeria relations, following recent online exchanges that drew public attention and sparked debate across both countries.

While officials in Nairobi and Abuja have not indicated any formal diplomatic fallout, the remarks have kept the bilateral relationship under close scrutiny, particularly in the digital space where public discourse has been active.

Despite this backdrop, the Africa–France Summit is expected to focus on broader continental priorities.

Key among these are financing climate adaptation, expanding renewable energy, strengthening digital infrastructure, and pushing for reforms in global financial institutions to better reflect the needs of developing economies.

Kenya’s role as co-host highlights its growing diplomatic influence within Africa and its position as a convening hub for high-level international engagements.

The summit is also expected to provide an opportunity for leaders to align positions ahead of other global meetings on climate and development financing later in the year.
