Speaking on the ongoing debate over rising fuel prices, Mbadi said the government should be appreciated for maintaining a steady and continuous supply of petroleum products despite global market pressures and regional instability affecting supply chains.
He noted that in several countries, fuel shortages have forced authorities to take what he described as desperate and emergency measures, a situation Kenya has so far managed to avoid.
According to him, this stability has been achieved through deliberate policy decisions aimed at keeping fuel available in the local market, even as prices remain high due to international factors.
“The government should be appreciated for ensuring a continuous supply of fuel. Other countries have taken desperate measures. The levies and taxes are meant to support the development agenda of our economy,” Mbadi said.
He further explained that taxes and levies imposed on fuel are not arbitrary but are instead directed toward funding key government development projects and sustaining the country’s economic agenda.
Mbadi maintained that revenue collected from fuel products plays a critical role in financing infrastructure, public services, and other national priorities that benefit citizens across the country.
His remarks come at a time when fuel prices have remained a major concern for households, transport operators, and businesses, with many calling for reduced taxes and urgent intervention to ease the cost of living.
Transport stakeholders have in recent weeks expressed frustration over the rising cost of fuel, arguing that it has made operations increasingly unsustainable and forced some operators to consider fare adjustments.
However, the Treasury CS has consistently maintained that the government is balancing the need to support citizens with the need to raise revenue for national development projects.
He emphasized that while global oil prices and geopolitical tensions continue to affect fuel costs, Kenya’s priority has been to ensure availability and avoid shortages that could cripple economic activity.
The government has also indicated that it is reviewing possible measures to cushion citizens from the impact of high fuel prices, including subsidies and fiscal adjustments where necessary.
