Members of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Homa Bay County have issued a stern warning to the government, saying they will down their tools if Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers are not employed on permanent and pensionable terms.

The teachers argue that their continued temporary status denies them job security and access to benefits that come with formal government employment.

Speaking during a meeting in Homa Bay town, union leaders said the delay in regularizing JSS teachers is causing frustration and uncertainty among educators.

They stressed that many teachers have served in the education sector for years, yet continue to work under temporary contracts, making it difficult for them to plan for their future.

The KUPPET officials highlighted that permanent employment is not only a matter of personal security but also impacts the quality of education.

Teachers on temporary terms are less motivated and often face financial difficulties, which can affect classroom performance and student outcomes.

They also pointed out that other cadres in the education sector enjoy full employment benefits, and JSS teachers should not be left behind.

According to the union, the government had promised to address the matter, but no concrete action has been taken.

KUPPET members in Homa Bay insist that unless the government acts immediately to formalize their employment, they will resort to industrial action, including strikes and other measures, to press for their rights.

Parents and school administrators have expressed concern over the threat, warning that a strike could disrupt learning and affect thousands of students.

They have called for urgent dialogue between the teachers’ union and the Ministry of Education to avoid disruptions in schools.
