The suspect, identified as Ken Kimanthi Gichunuku, also known by the nickname “Sultan,” was captured following a joint operation by officers from the homicide unit, Kisii South, and Busia.
According to investigators, Gichunuku had been on the run since the killing of Seth Nyakio Njeri, whose body was found on October 14, 2024.
Nyakio’s lifeless body was discovered inside Blessings Building in Biafra Estate, Thika, an incident that shocked residents and triggered a nationwide search for the suspect.
After the murder, detectives say Gichunuku disappeared and deliberately kept a low profile to avoid arrest.
He is believed to have moved across different regions, changing his routine and contacts as he tried to stay ahead of the law.
For months, investigators followed various leads, reviewed forensic evidence, and tracked movements connected to the case.
The search finally came to an end on Wednesday when detectives traced the suspect to Busia town, close to the Kenya–Uganda border.
Police say he had blended into the local community and was working at a cereal distribution shop, earning a living while hiding in plain sight. His arrest was carried out quietly to avoid alerting him or causing panic.
Officers described the operation as the result of patience, teamwork, and detailed forensic work.
They said the arrest shows that suspects cannot escape justice, no matter how long they remain on the run or how far they travel.
Following his capture, Gichunuku was taken into police custody, where he is currently being processed.
Investigators are completing the necessary paperwork as they prepare to present him before a court of law.
