Among those honoured are National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and National Intelligence Service Director General Noordin Haji.
The announcement was published in a special issue of the Kenya Gazette on December 10, 2025, following recommendations by the Committee on Senior Counsel.
This committee, chaired by Senior Counsel Philip Murgor, carefully vetted candidates before proposing them for the distinguished rank on Thursday, December 4, 2025.
Senior Counsel is the highest professional honour in Kenya’s legal fraternity, awarded to advocates who demonstrate outstanding skill, integrity, and dedication to public service.
President Ruto said the conferment recognises both the professional excellence of the recipients and their commitment to advancing justice, upholding the rule of law, and contributing to national development.
Using powers granted under Section 17(1) of the Advocates Act, President Ruto formally bestowed the honour, adding that the 54 advocates have consistently demonstrated leadership and professionalism in their legal practice.
He highlighted that the recognition reflects not only individual achievement but also the role of the legal profession in strengthening Kenya’s democratic institutions.
The newly appointed Senior Counsels come from diverse areas of practice, including public service, private practice, and corporate law.
Their work has influenced legislation, shaped legal thought, and contributed to the interpretation and enforcement of Kenyan law.
Speaking on the occasion, legal experts said the appointment is a mark of distinction, elevating the recipients to the highest echelons of the legal profession.
