Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has provided an update on the progress of the Social Health Authority (SHA), saying the program is steadily improving access to healthcare for Kenyans.

Speaking candidly, Duale acknowledged that while payments to hospitals under SHA are being processed slowly, the impact of the system on citizens’ health is already significant.

“SHA lipa pole pole,” Duale said, explaining that the system is designed to ensure accuracy, prevent fraud, and protect public funds.

He added that although reimbursements may not always be immediate, every enrolled Kenyan is receiving the healthcare they deserve.

According to Duale, as of this evening, over 420,000 Kenyans have enrolled in SHA, contributing a total of KSh 1.4 billion.

This has allowed many citizens to access specialized medical treatment that was not available through previous health insurance schemes. He emphasized that the program is opening doors to better care for ordinary Kenyans.

“This is a huge step forward,” Duale said. “For the first time, ordinary Kenyans can access advanced treatment without worrying about costs.”

He noted that the SHA system is designed to serve everyone fairly, ensuring that all citizens, regardless of income, can receive quality healthcare.

Duale also highlighted a key improvement in the support for cancer patients.

He said that President William Ruto, in his wisdom, increased the SHA reimbursement package for cancer treatment from KSh 550,000 to KSh 800,000.

This adjustment, he explained, provides greater financial relief to patients and their families, allowing them to focus on recovery rather than medical bills.

The Health CS pointed out that the success of SHA is due in part to digital systems that track claims and detect irregularities.

These systems prevent misuse of funds and ensure that hospitals and clinics are reimbursed correctly.

Duale emphasized that technology is helping to build a transparent and accountable healthcare system.

He urged more Kenyans to register for SHA, noting that the process is simple and secure. “Every Kenyan deserves access to healthcare, and SHA is making that possible,” Duale said.

He reassured citizens that the program is continuously being strengthened to cover more facilities and services, including advanced treatments that were previously out of reach.

Duale also addressed critics, saying that while headlines often focus on delays or complaints, the numbers tell the real story.

Hundreds of thousands of Kenyans are already benefiting, specialized care is accessible, and billions of shillings are being properly used to improve health services.
