As Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania prepare to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027, the government has revealed plans to invite a high-level inspection team from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The visit will assess the progress of key stadiums set to host the tournament, ensuring they meet the required standards well ahead of time.

Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, made the announcement during an inspection tour on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

The tour focused on the major sports facilities earmarked for the tournament, and the CS expressed satisfaction with the progress being made.

During the visit, Mvurya said the government was particularly impressed by the construction works at the Raila Odinga International Stadium, which is being built to seat 60,000 spectators.

He also praised the ongoing rehabilitation work at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium.

These venues are expected to host several matches during the AFCON tournament, making their readiness crucial to the success of the event.

To ensure everything is on the right track, the government has decided to invite CAF early to review the progress.

Mvurya explained that the move is meant to allow the inspection team to offer suggestions and feedback while contractors are still on site.

This way, any necessary improvements can be incorporated into the construction and rehabilitation works without causing delays or extra costs.

“We have decided to invite CAF in advance to review with us the progress and offer other suggestions they want while the contractor is still on the ground so that we incorporate those ideas into the construction works,” Mvurya said.

The CS also expressed confidence that Kenya and the East African region, under the Pamoja Countries partnership, are ready to host a world-class tournament.

He noted that the government has invested heavily in sports infrastructure to ensure the country delivers a memorable AFCON event.

Mvurya’s optimism reflects the broader national goal of showcasing Kenya’s capacity to host major international events.

The AFCON tournament will be a major opportunity for the country to boost tourism, create jobs, and showcase the region’s cultural and sporting talent on a global stage.

The government’s proactive approach aims to prevent last-minute rushes and last-minute fixes, which have affected similar events in the past.

By involving CAF early, Kenya hopes to align its preparations with the continental body’s standards and avoid any surprises that could affect the tournament’s schedule.
