In a move that is set to bring a political showdown through the Kenya Kwanza alliance, President William Ruto has allegedly tapped Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka to lead his 2027 re-election campaign in the region.

This isn't just a standard appointment, it’s a significant tactical pivot.

By placing Lusaka at the helm of the Western Broad-based Movement, Ruto is effectively bypassing the traditional heavyweights of the region, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

While these two have long been seen as the gatekeepers of the Mulembe nation, this new structure suggests a desire for a more direct, grassroots approach to securing votes.

Governor Lusaka hasn’t wasted any time. He has already hit the ground running, assembling a team designed to bridge the gap between the executive and the local voter.

However, not everyone is sold on the idea. Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has been quick to voice his skepticism, taking to social media to offer a blunt reality check.

Amisi’s critique is sharp, suggesting that the renaissance Kenya needs won't come from political appointments, but from the fulfillment of campaign promises.

His argument is simple that voters in Western Kenya care more about tangible development and delivered pledges than they do about who is coordinating the rallies.

This shift places Lusaka in a high-pressure make or break position.

To succeed, he must navigate the delicate ego-politics of the region while convincing a skeptical electorate that the current administration is their best bet for the future.

As we inch closer to 2027, all eyes will be on how this new power dynamic plays out.

Will Lusaka’s local touch be enough to consolidate the Western vote, or will the gatekeeper bypass backfire?

One thing is certain that the battle for Western Kenya has officially entered its next phase.
