Oketch Salah has shared a deeply personal story about his relationship with the late Raila Odinga, revealing how a single moment changed his life forever.

According to Salah, Raila made him his adopted son after he was sent to read a speech at the burial of the late Dalmas Otieno, a moment that marked the beginning of a close bond between the two.

Speaking emotionally, Salah said he was still young and finding his way when he was asked to read a speech on Raila Odinga’s behalf during Dalmas Otieno’s burial.

He described the task as heavy and intimidating, given the importance of the occasion and the stature of the leaders present.

Despite his fear, he gathered courage and delivered the speech to the best of his ability.

Salah said Raila was deeply touched by how he handled the responsibility.

After the burial, Raila called him aside and spoke to him in a fatherly way. From that day, Salah says, Raila began treating him not just as a supporter or aide, but as a son.

“He did not just guide me in politics,” Salah said. “He took interest in my life, my education, and my future.”

According to him, Raila offered advice, encouragement, and discipline, always reminding him of the importance of integrity, humility, and service to the people.

Salah explained that being adopted by Raila was not about public announcements or formal ceremonies.

It was shown through actions. Raila checked on him, corrected him when he went wrong, and pushed him to think beyond himself.

He said Raila often spoke about sacrifice and standing firm for what is right, even when it comes at a personal cost.

The young leader said the experience shaped his character and worldview. Watching Raila over the years, he learned resilience, patience, and the courage to stand up for one’s beliefs.

Salah said Raila taught him that leadership is not about personal gain, but about serving others and leaving a lasting impact.

Salah also reflected on Dalmas Otieno, saying his burial became an unexpected turning point in his life.

He said Otieno was a respected leader whose passing brought together many political figures, and being trusted to speak at such an event was an honor he did not take lightly.

He added that Raila’s gesture showed a softer, often unseen side of the veteran leader.

“Many people see the public Raila,” Salah said, “but few see the mentor and father figure he is to those close to him.”
