Helicopter carrying six people crashed and caught fire in Chepkiep, Mosop Constituency, Nandi County, on Friday, February 28, 2026, officials confirmed.

The incident has raised serious concerns, and authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

According to initial reports from local authorities, the chopper went down in a remote area of Chepkiep, shortly after taking off from a nearby airstrip.

Eyewitnesses said smoke and flames were visible immediately after the aircraft hit the ground, prompting a swift response from local residents and security personnel.

“The helicopter crashed and caught fire. There were six people on board, and rescue operations are ongoing,” said a county official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Emergency teams were immediately dispatched to the scene to control the fire, rescue survivors, and secure the area.

Officials confirmed that casualties had been reported, but details about the condition of those on board were still being verified.

Hospitals in the region have been alerted and are preparing to receive any victims who may require urgent medical attention.

Eyewitnesses described the crash as “shocking and terrifying.” Some residents said they heard a loud explosion followed by the sight of smoke rising from the crash site.

Security personnel cordoned off the area to allow investigators and rescue teams to work safely.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has also been informed, and a team of investigators is expected to arrive to determine the cause of the accident.

Officials said it is too early to speculate on whether mechanical failure, pilot error, or other factors contributed to the crash.

Local leaders have called for calm as rescue efforts continue. They urged the public to avoid the crash site to allow emergency responders to operate efficiently.

“We are monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with all relevant agencies. Our priority is to rescue those on board and provide medical support,” said a Nandi County official.

Residents in Chepkiep expressed shock, saying such incidents are rare in the area. Community members have been assisting security personnel in ensuring the safety of the surrounding area and helping with logistics where possible.

Authorities have appealed to the media and the public to rely on verified information as investigations unfold.

Updates are expected as the Civil Aviation Authority and local officials continue their work to establish the cause and confirm the status of all passengers.
