President William Ruto has appointed former Eldoret East Member of Parliament Joseph Lagat as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Board.

The appointment gives Lagat a three-year term in the leadership position of the state agency responsible for wildlife conservation and management in the country.

The appointment was announced through an official government notice, marking a new leadership change at KWS.

As Non-Executive Chairperson, Lagat will be responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight to the organisation while working closely with the management team to guide policy direction and decision-making.

Joseph Lagat is a seasoned politician who previously served as the Member of Parliament for Eldoret East.

During his time in Parliament, he was known for his involvement in development issues and legislative matters affecting his constituents.

His new appointment is expected to bring political and administrative experience to the wildlife agency.

The Kenya Wildlife Service plays a major role in protecting Kenya’s wildlife resources, managing national parks and reserves, and promoting conservation efforts.

The organisation is also tasked with addressing human-wildlife conflict, supporting tourism, and protecting endangered species.

Lagat’s leadership will be important in guiding the agency as it continues to handle these responsibilities.

Government officials have expressed confidence in Lagat’s ability to support the agency’s mission.

They believe his experience in leadership and public service will help strengthen KWS operations and improve collaboration between the agency and other government institutions.

Wildlife conservation remains a key sector in Kenya’s economy, especially because of its contribution to tourism.

National parks and wildlife reserves attract visitors from around the world, generating revenue and creating employment opportunities for many communities.

The government has continued to emphasise the importance of strong leadership in conservation agencies to ensure wildlife resources are well protected.

Lagat takes over the role at a time when KWS is working to address several challenges, including illegal wildlife trade, environmental changes, and increasing human-wildlife conflicts in some parts of the country.

Conservation experts say strong leadership and proper coordination are important in handling these issues effectively.
