Azimio coalition has withdrawn several key requests from a High Court petition that sought to hold senior police commanders responsible for deaths linked to the 2023 anti-government protests.

The decision marks a significant change in one of the legal battles that attracted public attention following the demonstrations that took place across different parts of the country.

The petition had been filed to push for accountability over more than 70 deaths reported during the protests.

The demonstrations, which were organised by opposition leaders, were held to challenge the government over issues such as the rising cost of living and concerns about governance.

The protests led to clashes between demonstrators and police officers, resulting in casualties and property damage.

Initially, the petition sought strong legal action against senior police officers, accusing them of failing to control their officers and prevent the loss of lives.

The case also aimed to compel authorities to take disciplinary and legal measures against those found responsible for the deaths.

However, Azimio has now stepped back from some of these demands, though details about the exact prayers withdrawn have not been fully explained in public.

Legal experts say such a move could mean that the coalition is reviewing its legal strategy or responding to new developments surrounding the case.

Some analysts believe the decision may also be influenced by ongoing political discussions and efforts to ease tensions between political players.

Others argue that withdrawing some requests does not necessarily mean abandoning the search for justice but could signal a shift in approach.

Families of victims and human rights organisations have continued to demand accountability and transparency over the deaths.

Many have called for independent investigations to establish what happened during the protests and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

The 2023 demonstrations remain one of the most sensitive political events in recent years, with both the government and opposition offering different views about what led to the violence.

Government officials have previously defended police actions, stating that officers were maintaining law and order during the demonstrations.

However, rights groups have consistently argued that excessive force was used in some cases, raising concerns about the conduct of security agencies.
