Siaya Governor James Orengo has accused President William Ruto of interfering in the internal affairs of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), saying the party’s current leadership tensions are a result of external influence.

Orengo stated that ODM has always been a strong political party with clear structures, but meddling from outside is creating confusion and divisions among members.

Speaking to the media, Orengo said that the party’s challenges are not due to internal weakness but rather the involvement of leaders who have no mandate in ODM.

He singled out President Ruto, claiming that his actions are undermining the party’s autonomy and stability.

“The problem in ODM is President Ruto,” Orengo said. “We are asking him to let ODM go. The party belongs to its members, and they should decide its direction without outside interference.”

The governor emphasised that ODM has a long history of democratic processes, with decisions made through dialogue and consultation among members.

He said the party has survived many internal disagreements over the years because leaders and members respected its rules and principles.

Orengo warned that external meddling threatens this tradition and could weaken the party’s unity.

He further explained that the timing of interference is particularly concerning. Kenya is facing numerous challenges, including high unemployment, rising cost of living, and inadequate access to basic services.

Orengo argued that political leaders should focus on solving these problems rather than creating divisions in established parties.

According to him, external pressures distract ODM leaders from addressing the real issues affecting citizens.

Orengo also noted that ODM has always been committed to promoting democracy, fairness, and accountability.

He said the party’s structure ensures that decisions reflect the views of its members, not external actors.

Interference from outside, he argued, could erode public trust in the party and weaken its credibility.

The governor urged ODM members to remain united and focus on the principles that have made the party strong.

He called on supporters to resist attempts to destabilise the party from outside, saying loyalty to ODM’s values is more important than reacting to political manipulation.

“We must protect our party,” Orengo said, “because ODM has always stood for the people, and we cannot allow anyone to take that away.”
