Heavy rains pounding Nairobi have caused serious flooding in several parts of the city, leaving residents stranded and disrupting movement along key roads.

Authorities say the situation has become dangerous in some areas as rising water levels continue to overwhelm streets and vehicles.

According to Geoffrey Mosiria, emergency teams are currently struggling to respond to all distress calls due to the scale of the flooding.

Mosiria has now appealed for additional rescue teams to assist county officers in saving people trapped in floodwaters.

In a statement issued on Friday night, March 6, 2026, Mosiria said one of the most critical situations was reported near Riverside, close to Kamukunji Police Station.

The area has been badly affected by the heavy rains, with several vehicles reportedly submerged after water levels rose quickly.

“Some people are still trapped inside their cars,” Mosiria said, warning that the situation was becoming increasingly urgent.

He explained that floodwaters had surrounded several vehicles, making it difficult for occupants to escape on their own.

Emergency responders from the county government rushed to the scene to begin rescue operations, but Mosiria noted that more manpower and equipment were needed to handle the situation effectively.

He urged additional emergency teams and volunteers to assist in the rescue mission.

The heavy downpour has also caused major traffic disruptions across Nairobi.

Several roads in the central business district and surrounding neighbourhoods have been flooded, slowing down vehicles and forcing some motorists to abandon their cars.

Residents in low-lying areas reported that water quickly filled roads and pathways, making movement almost impossible in some places.

Pedestrians were forced to wade through water while others sought shelter in nearby buildings as the rains continued.

Mosiria urged residents to avoid flooded roads and to prioritise their safety as the rescue teams work to manage the emergency.

He also advised motorists not to attempt driving through flooded sections of the city, warning that floodwaters can quickly rise and trap vehicles.

County officials say they are monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with emergency services to ensure people in danger are rescued as quickly as possible.

The county government has also asked residents to report emergency cases through official channels so that rescue teams can respond faster.
