The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged Kenyans living in several parts of the country to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall expected over the next five days.

In a weather advisory released on Friday, March 13, the department said the rains will affect many regions, including parts of Western Kenya, the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the South-eastern Lowlands.

According to the weather agency, residents in these areas should be ready for changing weather conditions as the rains are expected to become stronger in the afternoons.

The department explained that most places will first experience light showers in the morning, followed by sunny intervals in the mid-morning before the heavier rainfall begins later in the day.

Several counties in the western region and around the Lake Victoria Basin are expected to receive significant rainfall.

These include Siaya County, Kisumu County, Homa Bay County, Migori County, Kisii County and Nyamira County.

Other counties expected to experience the same weather pattern include Trans Nzoia County, Baringo County, Uasin Gishu County, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Nandi County, Nakuru County, Narok County, Kericho County and Bomet County.

Counties in Western Kenya such as Kakamega County, Vihiga County, Bungoma County, Busia County and West Pokot County are also expected to receive heavy rainfall during the same period.

The meteorological department noted that the afternoon rains in these regions are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially during heavy downpours, as thunderstorms can sometimes bring strong winds and lightning.

The department further explained that the weather pattern will not be limited to western regions.

Similar conditions are expected in the Central Highlands, where counties such as Nyandarua County, Laikipia County, Nyeri County, Kirinyaga County, Murang'a County and Kiambu County are also expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall.

Other counties that may experience similar weather include Meru County, Embu County and Tharaka Nithi County.

The advisory also included Nairobi County, where residents should also prepare for afternoon and evening rainfall during the forecast period.

In addition to the afternoon storms, the weather department warned that some areas could also experience rainfall at night.

These conditions may continue throughout the five-day forecast period.

The Kenya Meteorological Department encouraged the public to stay informed by following regular weather updates and advisories.

Farmers, motorists, and residents in flood-prone areas have been particularly advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions during the rainy period.
