Members of Parliament were briefly left in laughter after the Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang'ula, made a light-hearted remark while introducing nominated MP Truphena Muthoni in the House.

The moment happened during a parliamentary sitting when the Speaker formally acknowledged Muthoni’s presence and role in the National Assembly.

While addressing the lawmakers, Wetang’ula jokingly told the MPs not to be distracted by her well-known environmental activism.

“Truphena only hugs trees,” the Speaker said humorously, before adding, “Members, do not lose focus.”

The comment triggered laughter across the chamber, with several MPs appearing amused by the remark.

The light moment briefly broke the usual seriousness that often characterizes parliamentary debates.

Truphena Muthoni is widely recognized for her strong involvement in environmental conservation.

Over the years, she has participated in activities aimed at protecting forests, promoting tree planting, and encouraging communities to take care of the environment.

Because of this activism, she has often been associated with campaigns that emphasize the importance of protecting nature.

Tree planting exercises, environmental awareness programs, and climate advocacy are among the causes she has supported.

The Speaker’s reference to “hugging trees” appeared to highlight her dedication to environmental issues. While the phrase was said jokingly, it reflected Muthoni’s reputation as someone passionate about conservation.

Despite the humorous remark, Wetang’ula quickly reminded MPs to remain focused on the parliamentary business at hand.

Parliament sessions often involve discussing important matters affecting the country, including legislation, government oversight, and national policies.

The Speaker’s role includes maintaining order in the House and ensuring that discussions remain productive.

Occasionally, he also uses humor to ease tension in the chamber, especially during long or heated sessions.

Muthoni, who was seated among other nominated MPs, appeared to take the moment in good spirit.

Several members turned toward her with smiles as the Speaker continued with the proceedings.

Environmental issues have become an increasingly important topic in Kenya, especially as the country faces challenges such as deforestation, climate change, and land degradation.

Activists like Muthoni have often called for stronger policies to protect forests and promote sustainable development.

Kenya has also taken steps to encourage tree planting as part of national environmental programs aimed at increasing forest cover across the country.
