Heavy rains that have been falling across several parts of Kenya this week have caused serious flooding in many regions, leaving families displaced and destroying homes and property.

One of the counties heavily affected by the downpour is Homa Bay County, where overflowing rivers and flooded fields have disrupted the lives of many residents.

In response to the growing crisis, Gladys Wanga issued a public statement on Saturday, March 7, 2026, expressing concern over the damage caused by the ongoing rains.

She said the situation had affected communities in both Homa Bay County and the capital city, Nairobi.

“We are deeply concerned by the devastating flooding currently affecting several parts of our country, including sections of Homa Bay County and the city of Nairobi,” Governor Wanga said.

According to the governor, the heavy rainfall has caused rivers in parts of Homa Bay to burst their banks, sending water flowing into nearby homes and farms.

In low-lying areas, large sections of land have turned into waterlogged zones, forcing families to move to safer locations.

Residents living close to rivers and flood-prone areas have been among the most affected.

Some families reported waking up to find water already entering their homes after the rivers overflowed during the night.

Many had little time to rescue their belongings before the water spread through their houses.

“The heavy rains have caused significant disruption, displacement of families, destruction of property and loss of livelihoods,” Wanga said in her statement.

She explained that many residents depend on farming and small businesses to support their families, and the flooding has placed these livelihoods at risk.

Crops planted in fields have been submerged, while some small shops and homes have been damaged by the rising waters.

Local authorities in Homa Bay have been monitoring the situation closely and working with disaster response teams to assist affected families.

Emergency teams have been deployed in some areas to help evacuate residents and provide support to those whose homes have been flooded.

Governor Wanga also expressed sympathy for residents in Nairobi who were affected by the same rains.

Several neighbourhoods in the capital have experienced flooding after drainage systems were overwhelmed by the heavy downpour.

Across the country, the rains have highlighted the challenges faced by communities living in flood-prone areas.

Experts say climate patterns and poor drainage systems in urban and rural areas can worsen flooding during intense rainfall.

Wanga called for unity and cooperation among national and county authorities to ensure affected families receive the assistance they need.

She urged residents to remain alert and follow safety advice from local officials, especially those living near rivers or in low-lying areas.
