Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has criticised the latest increase in fuel prices, saying it will place an additional burden on Kenyans who are already struggling with the high cost of living.

In a statement shared on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Babu said the rise in fuel prices will have a ripple effect across the economy, affecting not only motorists but also the prices of essential goods and services.

He warned that the increase is likely to push up the cost of food, transport, and other basic, making life more expensive for many households.

The MP expressed concern that the timing of the price hike is particularly difficult for citizens who are already facing financial pressure.

He said many small businesses could be negatively affected as higher transport and operational costs reduce their profit margins and overall sustainability.

According to him, workers will also feel the impact as commuting costs rise, further straining household budgets that are already stretched.

He noted that families may be forced to make difficult financial adjustments to cope with the increased cost of living.

“It is deeply frustrating that at a time when citizens are crying out for relief, the government continues to implement policies that only deepen the burden.

Small businesses will suffer, workers will feel the pinch in their daily commutes, and families will be forced to stretch already thin budgets,” Babu said.

He argued that leadership should focus on protecting citizens from economic hardship, especially during periods of rising global and local prices.

The MP called for more responsive policies that prioritise easing the cost of living rather than adding to existing challenges.

Babu further emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in decision-making processes related to fuel pricing.

He said Kenyans deserve clear explanations and practical solutions to address the ongoing increases in fuel costs.

“Leadership should be about protecting the people, not pushing them further into hardship.

Kenyans deserve transparency, accountability, and solutions that ease the cost of living, not decisions that worsen it,” he added.

The legislator urged the government to listen to public concerns and take immediate steps to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices.

He maintained that the voices of ordinary citizens must be taken into account when making policy decisions that directly affect their livelihoods.

“Enough is enough. The voices of the people must be heard,” he said.
