The National Police Service (NPS) fraternity is mourning the death of Kitutu Central Sub-County Police Commander Kazungu Charo.

According to a police report filed at Nyanchwa Police Station and obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, the senior officer died after a prolonged illness.

Charo reportedly fell ill on the night of Thursday, April 16, 2026, prompting his family and colleagues to rush him to Mediforte Hospital at about 5am for urgent medical attention.

Despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilise his condition, he later succumbed.

His death comes just weeks after he had been discharged from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu, where he had been undergoing specialised treatment.

Sources indicate that although he had shown signs of improvement following his discharge, his condition deteriorated suddenly, leading to the late-night emergency.

The loss has sent shockwaves through the police service, with colleagues describing Charo as a dedicated and disciplined officer who served with commitment.

His leadership at the Kitutu Central Sub-County Police Command had earned him respect among fellow officers and members of the public.

While details surrounding his illness remain limited, the police report confirms that he had been unwell for some time before his death.

The circumstances leading to his sudden deterioration are yet to be fully outlined.

Charo’s passing adds to the growing concern over the health and welfare of officers in the service, with calls for enhanced medical support and wellness programmes.

Fellow officers have expressed grief, noting that his death is a significant loss not only to his family but also to the broader policing community.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement detailing funeral arrangements.

It is expected that more information will be provided in the coming days as the family and the National Police Service coordinate burial plans.

As the NPS fraternity comes to terms with the loss, tributes continue to pour in from colleagues and those who interacted with him during his service.

Many have remembered him for his professionalism, leadership, and dedication to duty.
