Nairobi Regional Police Commander has warned against what he termed as “illegal” protests in the Central Business District (CBD) ahead of planned demonstrations scheduled for Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Monday, the commander cautioned organisers and participants to adhere to the law, noting that any gathering that does not comply with legal requirements would not be tolerated.

He emphasised that the police are committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring that businesses and normal activities within the city are not disrupted.

“We have received information about planned demonstrations in the CBD.

We want to make it clear that any protests that do not follow the law will be considered illegal, and appropriate action will be taken,” the commander said.

He urged those intending to protest to notify the police in advance, as required by law, to allow security agencies to provide protection and guide the process.

According to him, failure to do so not only puts the demonstrators at risk but also exposes the public to potential insecurity.

The warning comes amid rising tension in the city, with various groups mobilising supporters to take part in the demonstrations.

While the organisers insist the protests will be peaceful, authorities have expressed concern over possible infiltration by criminal elements.

The police boss assured Nairobi residents and business owners of their safety, adding that adequate security measures have been put in place across the CBD and surrounding areas.

He said officers will be deployed strategically to manage any situation that may arise.

“We are not against peaceful demonstrations. However, they must be conducted within the confines of the law.

We will not allow any form of lawlessness, destruction of property, or disruption of business,” he added.

Traders in the CBD have expressed mixed reactions ahead of the planned protests.

Some said they are considering closing their businesses for the day to avoid potential losses, while others remain hopeful that the situation will remain calm.

Human rights groups have also weighed in, calling on the police to exercise restraint and respect the rights of citizens who choose to demonstrate peacefully.

They emphasised the importance of dialogue and adherence to constitutional freedoms, including the right to assemble.
