Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has recounted the moments leading up to the attack in which he was assaulted by a group of youths, saying he initially did not sense any danger.

Speaking after the incident, the senator described how the situation unfolded, noting that the group approached him while calling out his title in what appeared to be a friendly manner.

“I saw a group of youth, and they were shouting ‘Senator’. They didn’t look hostile, so I said, ‘Wacha wakuje kunisalimia.’ I didn’t see I was in danger until they started hitting me,” Osotsi said.

According to his account, the group’s approach did not immediately raise alarm, as their tone and conduct at first seemed non-threatening.

He said this gave him the impression that they intended to greet him, as is often the case during public interactions.

However, the situation changed abruptly when the group allegedly turned violent. Osotsi said he was caught off guard by the sudden shift, leaving him little time to react or seek help.

The senator sustained injuries during the attack and was later admitted to hospital, where he received treatment before being discharged.

The incident has since drawn public attention and concern over the safety of political leaders during routine engagements.

Osotsi’s account highlights the unpredictable nature of such encounters, particularly in public spaces where leaders frequently interact with members of the public.

What may initially appear as a routine greeting can quickly escalate, as seen in this case.

Following the attack, the senator has called for thorough investigations to establish the motive and identify those responsible.

He has also urged security agencies to enhance protection measures, especially during public engagements.

The incident has sparked debate on the need for heightened vigilance and better crowd management, with some observers pointing to the risks associated with unstructured interactions in politically charged environments.

Osotsi has maintained that the attack should not be trivialised and stressed the importance of ensuring accountability.

He said incidents of violence against leaders or members of the public undermine trust and stability.

Despite the experience, the senator has indicated that he remains committed to his duties and will continue engaging with constituents, while taking necessary precautions to ensure his safety.
