Detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and the Operation Action Team (OAT) have arrested three suspects linked to a case of robbery with violence and gang rape in Butere.

According to investigators, the incident occurred on the night of January 28, 2026, when the suspects allegedly broke into a shop in Butere under the cover of  darkness.

Police say the group gained entry into the premises before confronting the shopkeeper.

Authorities report that the attackers assaulted the woman and subjected her to gang rape before fleeing from the scene.

The incident has been described by investigators as a serious crime that caused significant trauma to the victim.

The suspects are also accused of stealing goods valued at approximately Sh200,000, along with an undisclosed amount of cash believed to have been part of the day’s sales.

Police say the attackers left behind extensive losses and distress following the incident.

Following the report, detectives launched a targeted investigation aimed at identifying and apprehending those responsible.

The operation involved coordinated efforts between specialised units, including CRIB and OAT, who pursued leads to track down the suspects.

The investigation led officers to Mabungo village, where two of the suspects, identified as Benard Yaya Anaswa and Kelvin Omutanyi Zablon, were located and arrested.

Police say the arrests were carried out as part of a broader operation to dismantle the group believed to be behind the attack.

Authorities confirmed that a third suspect was also arrested in connection with the case, although further details regarding their identity and the circumstances of the arrest have not yet been disclosed.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to be processed before being arraigned in court.

They are likely to face multiple charges, including robbery with violence and gang rape.

Investigators say efforts are ongoing to gather additional evidence and establish the full sequence of events leading up to the attack.

Police are also working to determine whether the suspects may be linked to other similar incidents in the area.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for victims of serious crimes.

Officials have also emphasised the importance of public cooperation in reporting incidents and providing information that may assist in investigations.
