ODM Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo has cautioned that the party may reconsider its position in the broad-based government if the current arrangement continues to be associated with what she described as the oppression of ordinary Kenyans through rising living costs.

Omanyo said the party is closely monitoring the economic situation and its impact on citizens, warning that continued hardship could force ODM to review its participation in the existing political framework.

She noted that the rising cost of living remains a major concern for many households, with increasing prices of essential goods and services placing pressure on family budgets.

According to the ODM official, the party joined the broad-based government with the expectation that it would contribute to improving the lives of Kenyans.

However, she indicated that this objective may not be achieved if the economic burden on citizens continues to grow.

Omanyo pointed to concerns raised by members of the public over the cost of basic commodities, fuel, and other essential services.

She said such challenges risk undermining confidence in the government and could have wider implications for political stability if not addressed.

She emphasised that ODM remains committed to advocating for policies that ease the burden on wananchi.

At the same time, she maintained that the party would not hesitate to take a different position if it becomes clear that the current arrangement is not serving the interests of the people.

The remarks reflect growing debate within political circles over the effectiveness of the broad-based government in addressing economic challenges.

Omanyo suggested that leaders must remain responsive to the needs of citizens and be willing to make difficult decisions where necessary.

She further noted that political cooperation should not come at the expense of public welfare, adding that leaders have a responsibility to ensure that governance structures deliver tangible benefits to the population.

While stopping short of outlining specific timelines, Omanyo indicated that the party would continue to assess the situation before making any formal decision.

She reiterated that the well-being of Kenyans remains the party’s primary concern.

Her comments come at a time when many Kenyans are grappling with increased expenses, prompting calls for interventions to stabilise prices and support households.

Analysts say such statements could signal potential shifts in political alignments if economic concerns persist.

ODM has yet to issue an official statement outlining its position following Omanyo’s remarks. It also remains unclear whether the party leadership will convene to deliberate on the issue in the near future.
