Citizen TV reporter Emily Chebet has been selected for the prestigious John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship, joining a global cohort of journalists set to spend an academic year at Stanford University in the United States.

Chebet, who specialises in health, science and environmental reporting, will be part of the JSK Fellowship Class of 2027, which brings together journalists and media professionals from diverse backgrounds and organisations around the world.

The 2027 cohort comprises 13 fellows drawn from different newsrooms, freelance journalism and institutions that support media practitioners and press freedom initiatives.

The selection reflects a wide range of experiences, including journalists working in traditional media as well as those engaged in emerging and independent media spaces.

The fellowship is designed to support mid-career professionals in exploring new ideas and approaches aimed at reimagining the future of journalism.

It comes at a time when the media industry is grappling with rapid technological change, financial pressures and growing concerns over press freedom globally.

The nine-month programme will see fellows engage in academic work, research and collaborative sessions aimed at developing practical solutions to challenges facing modern journalism.

These include newsroom sustainability, innovation in storytelling and strengthening the safety and independence of journalists.

According to JSK Fellowship Director Dawn Garcia, journalists today are working under increasingly complex and demanding conditions.

She noted that the pressures facing journalists continue to grow, requiring stronger support systems and innovative thinking to ensure the profession remains sustainable and independent.

The programme also exposes participants to new frameworks for addressing threats to journalism, including misinformation, declining trust in media institutions and the economic strain on news organisations.

For Chebet, the fellowship represents an opportunity to further develop her expertise in reporting on issues that directly affect public health and the environment, areas that have become increasingly critical in global and local reporting.

Her selection places her among an international group of journalists recognised for their contribution to storytelling and their potential to influence the future direction of journalism in their respective regions.

The JSK Fellowship is widely regarded as one of the leading journalism programmes globally, offering participants access to Stanford University’s academic resources, mentorship and a collaborative environment that encourages innovation in media practice.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, the fellowship aims to equip journalists with the skills and insights needed to navigate emerging challenges while strengthening the role of independent journalism in society.
