People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has said the united opposition will front a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a visit to Mosocho where she joined the family of Senator Richard Onyonka for a condolence event, Karua said opposition leaders were working towards unity in order to present a strong and coordinated front ahead of the next polls.

She used the occasion to eulogise and stand in solidarity with the family, describing the gathering as a moment of reflection and support during a difficult time for the Senator and his relatives.

Karua, who has been at the forefront of opposition politics, emphasized that ongoing consultations among various political leaders were bearing fruit, with a clear focus on consolidating support behind one candidate.

According to her, fragmentation within the opposition had previously weakened its competitiveness, but current efforts are aimed at ensuring a unified strategy going into the 2027 election period.

She noted that the discussions were not about individual ambitions but about presenting a collective leadership option that reflects the aspirations of Kenyans seeking change.

“The united opposition will front one candidate against President Ruto in 2027,” Karua stated, reinforcing the position that has increasingly been echoed by several opposition figures in recent months.

Her remarks come amid heightened political activity across the country as leaders begin early positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle. Various political formations have been holding meetings and public engagements aimed at strengthening their grassroots structures.

The Mosocho event also provided a platform for leaders to engage with the local community while offering condolences and support to Senator Onyonka’s family.

Karua’s message was received as a strong political signal, especially at a time when opposition leaders are under pressure to demonstrate unity and direction following the last general election.
