US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he was reluctant to wear a bulletproof vest despite multiple alleged assassination attempts, citing concerns about how it might affect his appearance.

“I don't know if I can handle looking 20 pounds heavier,” Trump told reporters when asked whether there had been discussions about him wearing additional protective gear.

According to US media reports, the possibility of the president wearing a protective vest has been under consideration following the latest alleged attempt on his life.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday during the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner held at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC.

“I've been asked about that. I guess it's something you consider,” Trump said. “In one way, you don't like to do it because you're giving in to a bad element. And so, I don't know. But I have been asked about it.”

Authorities have since charged a man in connection with the alleged assassination attempt during the high-profile gala.

Security officials said the suspect was subdued by Secret Service agents before he could gain access to the ballroom where the event was taking place.

The swift intervention by the agents prevented what could have been a serious security breach at one of Washington’s most prominent annual gatherings, which typically attracts top political leaders, journalists, and public figures.

The latest incident marks the third alleged attempt on Trump’s life within a span of two years, raising renewed concerns about presidential security and the measures required to ensure the safety of the head of state.

Despite the growing concerns, Trump appeared cautious about adopting visible protective measures such as a bulletproof vest, suggesting that doing so could be seen as conceding to threats.

Security experts have in the past noted that protective gear, including bullet-resistant clothing, is sometimes used discreetly by high-profile leaders facing credible threats.

However, such decisions are often influenced by a balance between safety, practicality, and public perception.
