Cherargei accused Sifuna of engaging in what he described as political intimidation and obstruction, saying such conduct threatens the stability of the broad-based government.
In a strongly worded statement, Cherargei claimed that Sifuna’s style of politics was well known and often used by what he termed “professional political extortionists.”
He argued that Sifuna’s continued stay as ODM Secretary General had become a liability, not only to his party but also to the broader cooperation between political formations in government.
According to Cherargei, Sifuna’s statements and posture were creating unnecessary tension and uncertainty within the broad-based government.
He insisted that for the sake of political stability and unity, Sifuna should be removed from his position.
The senator said this would allow Sifuna to freely join what he mockingly referred to as a “dis-united opposition,” without disrupting government affairs.
Cherargei also dismissed what he called threats and pressure tactics, saying such “cold threats” would eventually come to an end.
He urged political leaders to focus on service delivery and national unity instead of issuing statements that could divide the country.
The remarks came shortly after Sifuna, who is also the Nairobi Senator, stated that ODM’s decision regarding the 2027 elections would not be made by a small group of leaders at the top.
Sifuna emphasized that the party believed in consulting its supporters and the wider public before settling on its political direction.
“As members of ODM, we have said clearly that the decision the party will take towards 2027 will not be decided by a few people in boardrooms,” Sifuna said.
He added that the party would go to the grassroots to ask Kenyans what they want and respect the voice of the people.
