Senator Ledama Ole Kina has sparked a conversation about Kenya’s independence, urging citizens to reflect on economic justice alongside national celebrations.

According to the senator, while Kenyans celebrate freedom from colonial rule, the country continues to face the lingering effects of historical exploitation.

Speaking publicly, Ledama Ole Kina pointed out that during colonial times, Britain extracted more than $150 billion from Kenya through land grabs, plantations, and other economic activities.

He stressed that this wealth did not benefit ordinary Kenyans but enriched foreign firms and a small local elite.

The senator argued that the legacy of colonial economic exploitation continues to affect Kenya today, limiting opportunities for ordinary citizens while a few benefit disproportionately.

“Independence without economic justice is just a flag over someone else’s plantation,” Ledama said, highlighting that political freedom alone is not enough if economic inequality persists.

He urged Kenyans to consider the broader picture and ask themselves whether true independence has been achieved if wealth and land remain concentrated in the hands of a few.

The senator emphasised that acknowledging this history is crucial for building a fair and prosperous nation.

He encouraged discussions on land reforms, fair distribution of resources, and policies that ensure economic benefits reach ordinary citizens.

For him, celebrating independence should also mean addressing historical wrongs and working toward a more equitable economy.

Ledama Ole Kina’s message challenges leaders and citizens alike to rethink the meaning of freedom.

He said it is not enough to mark independence with ceremonies and flags while ignoring systemic inequalities that trace back to colonial exploitation.
