Thousands of Kenyan workers could lose their jobs after the government announced plans to shut down more than 300 companies within the next three months.
The move was revealed in a gazette notice dated January 2, 2026, issued by the Registrar of Companies, Damaris Lukwo.
The notice states that the affected firms will be removed from the official register starting in April 2026 if no action is taken.
Most of the companies targeted for closure operate in key service sectors. These include consultancy, private security, media, publishing, transport, supply, and building and construction.
Other firms listed are involved in education services, electrical works, insurance, internet services, milling, branding, cleaning, and general management services. These sectors employ thousands of Kenyans, especially in urban areas.
The Registrar of Companies has given a 90-day window for affected parties to raise objections.
Company owners, employees, creditors, or any interested person can explain why the firms should remain on the register.
