Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has dismissed attempts to brand him as a political kingpin for the Luo community alone, insisting that his leadership ambitions transcend ethnic boundaries.

Speaking during a public engagement, Babu said he is not interested in ethnic-based politics, arguing that Kenya’s future depends on leaders who unite the country rather than mobilise support along tribal lines.

He maintained that while he is proud of his Luo heritage, his political vision is national and people-centred.

“I don’t want to be a kingpin for the Luo community alone. I want to be a leader for all Kenyans,” Babu said, adding that the country has suffered for decades due to divisive politics anchored on ethnicity.

The outspoken legislator noted that his track record in Parliament and in Embakasi East constituency demonstrates inclusive leadership, pointing to development projects and advocacy that benefit Kenyans regardless of their background.

He said leaders must now focus on issues affecting ordinary citizens, including the high cost of living, unemployment, education and governance.

Babu’s remarks come amid growing debate within opposition politics over regional kingpins and succession politics, particularly as different communities position themselves ahead of future elections.

His statement is seen as a direct challenge to the long-standing culture where influential politicians are viewed primarily as ethnic spokespersons.

Political analysts say Babu’s stance could appeal to younger voters who are increasingly disillusioned with tribal politics and are demanding issue-based leadership.

However, they note that breaking away from ethnic political structures remains a major challenge in Kenya’s political landscape.

As the political temperatures continue to rise, Babu Owino’s declaration signals an attempt to rebrand himself from a community mobiliser to a national figure, positioning his politics around unity, reform and generational change.
