Uganda’s presidential vote counting is still underway, but early results show President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni taking a clear lead in the race.

The general election was held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, and provisional figures released so far suggest that the incumbent is well ahead of his rivals.

According to live updates from local media houses, including NBS Television, Museveni of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has secured about 70 percent of the votes counted so far.

As of the latest tally, he stands at 70.8 percent, which translates to 4,709,643 votes already recorded.

These figures are based on partial results, as vote counting is still ongoing in different parts of the country.

The early numbers place Museveni in a strong position as he seeks a seventh term in office. If the trend continues, it would further extend his long stay in power, which began in 1986.

Supporters of the NRM say the early lead reflects the party’s strong grassroots networks and Museveni’s continued influence, especially in rural areas.

Museveni’s main challenger, opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, widely known as Bobi Wine, is trailing behind according to the same provisional results.

Bobi Wine is the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and has built his campaign around calls for change, youth empowerment, and electoral reforms.

While his supporters remain hopeful that more votes from urban areas could narrow the gap, the current figures show a wide difference between him and the incumbent.

Election officials have urged the public to remain calm and patient as the counting process continues.

They have emphasized that the results announced so far are not final and could change as more polling stations submit their tallies.
