Supporters of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in Mumias East Constituency, Kakamega County, led by party official David Wamatsi, reportedly chased away a presiding officer from a local polling station, citing alleged irregularities in the ongoing grassroots elections.

The incident caused confusion at the centre and sparked tensions among voters who had gathered to cast their ballots.

According to eyewitnesses, Wamatsi and a group of supporters arrived at the polling station in the morning and accused the presiding officer of manipulating the voting process.

They claimed that ballot papers had been mishandled and that some candidates were being unfairly favoured.

The group demanded immediate intervention and attempted to take control of the station, leading to the presiding officer temporarily withdrawing from the centre.

“The process is not being conducted fairly,” said one supporter who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We cannot allow our votes to be stolen, and the presiding officer was not following the rules properly.”

The incident caused brief chaos as other voters expressed frustration at the disruption. Security personnel were called to the scene to prevent clashes and restore order.

Some party members tried to calm the situation, urging supporters to allow the election to continue without interference.

Wamatsi defended the action, saying UDA members have a duty to protect the integrity of the grassroots elections.

He said any attempt to rig the process or favour certain candidates would not be tolerated and that party supporters must remain vigilant.

Local UDA officials, however, have appealed for calm, urging members to follow official procedures if they notice any irregularities.

They emphasized that grievances should be reported through proper channels rather than disrupting the voting process, which could undermine the credibility of the elections.
