Nyeri Woman Representative Hon. Rahab Mukami publicly confronted Governor Mutahi Kahiga during an event attended by President William Ruto. She accused him of being indecisive and opportunistic.

Mukami told Kahiga directly, “Wewe ndio unatuongoza, wacha kuwa watermelon na uwe na msimamo!” meaning he should stop being a watermelon and take a firm stand.

The "watermelon" term is a common Kenyan political metaphor. It describes leaders who appear loyal to one side while secretly supporting another.

Mukami used it to criticize Kahiga for being unclear about his political stance in the ongoing tensions between President Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Mukami said that as a leader in Nyeri, Kahiga should not try to remain on both sides. She urged him to have a clear position and not appear to support both President Ruto and Gachagua at the same time. Her statement highlighted concerns about political loyalty and consistency in Mt. Kenya.

The confrontation took place during a high-profile gathering focusing on development and regional unity. Witnesses said the moment was tense.

Mukami’s words immediately drew attention and the video went viral on social media. Many people discussed the challenge, seeing it as a bold demand for accountability.

Governor Kahiga has been a long-time ally of Gachagua and defended him during the impeachment process.

He has also participated in some Ruto-led events in Nyeri, including development tours.

This dual participation created confusion and frustration among political observers who expect leaders to take clear stands ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mukami herself has faced criticism in the past. During Gachagua’s impeachment, she initially endorsed the motion but later abstained from the final vote.

Despite this, her challenge to Kahiga signals her insistence on clarity and firmness in leadership. She appears determined to call out perceived indecisiveness among prominent regional leaders.

The incident shows the ongoing political tension in Mt. Kenya. It highlights the difficulties leaders face balancing regional expectations with national politics.
