Section of the Nairobi-Nakuru highway near Mithuri in Naivasha was temporarily blocked after a group of youths staged protests demanding employment in the ongoing Rironi-Mau Summit road construction project.

The demonstrators, drawn from nearby communities, barricaded part of the busy highway, causing significant disruption to traffic as vehicles were forced to slow down or seek alternative routes.

The protest led to long queues of vehicles, with motorists expressing frustration over the delays.

The youths said they were unhappy that despite the major infrastructure project taking place in their area, many of them had not been considered for job opportunities.

They argued that local residents should be given priority in employment, especially for casual and semi-skilled roles associated with the construction works.

“We cannot sit and watch as outsiders take all the jobs yet this project is happening in our backyard,” one of the protesters said.

Another youth said the lack of employment opportunities had pushed many young people into hardship, adding that the construction project was seen as a chance to improve their livelihoods.

The Rironi-Mau Summit road upgrade is one of the key infrastructure projects aimed at easing congestion along the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway, a major transport corridor linking the capital to western Kenya and beyond.

However, the ongoing works have also drawn concerns from local communities who feel left out of the economic benefits associated with the project.

During the protest, the youths lit bonfires and used stones to block sections of the road, bringing traffic to a near standstill at some points.

Motorists and public service vehicle operators were caught in the disruption, with some forced to wait for hours before the situation was brought under control.

Security officers were deployed to the area to disperse the protesters and restore order.

Authorities engaged some of the demonstrators in discussions, urging them to clear the road and allow normal traffic flow to resume.

Local leaders who responded to the incident called for dialogue between the contractors and the community to address the grievances raised by the youths.

They emphasised the need for transparency in the hiring process and encouraged contractors to consider local labour where possible.

The protest highlights growing concerns among communities living near large infrastructure projects, where expectations for employment opportunities are often high.

Residents say inclusion in such projects not only provides income but also fosters a sense of ownership and cooperation.
