Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan has urged political leaders to concentrate on understanding Kenya’s political process and educating their voters, rather than worrying about the workings of the electoral body.

Speaking during the IEBC Stakeholder Engagement Forum on Monday, December 8, 2025, following the November 27 by-elections, Hassan highlighted the independence of the commission and stressed that neither it nor its commissioners can manipulate election results.

“My message to politicians is please spend energy in understanding the political process and educating your voters and not on how IEBC works.

IEBC cannot steal votes from you; a commissioner will not help you; it is your voters who will help you get elected,” Hassan stated.

He explained that elections are determined by voters, not by officials within the commission.

He said candidates should focus on campaigns, policy messaging, and engaging communities to secure votes, rather than spreading doubts about the integrity of the electoral system.

By doing so, politicians can strengthen democracy and public confidence in the electoral process.

Hassan also warned of the dangers of attacking the electoral referee ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He noted that undermining the IEBC could erode public trust, create confusion, and fuel unnecessary tension, which could destabilize the country.

He emphasized that Kenya’s electoral institutions operate transparently, with checks and balances, observers, and media scrutiny to ensure free and fair elections.

The commissioner encouraged political parties to train their agents, educate voters on their rights, and respect electoral rules.

He said that a well-informed electorate is crucial for credible election outcomes, and political leaders play a key role in guiding their supporters responsibly.
