The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has strongly condemned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for publicly criticizing Citizen TV reporter Stephen Letoo.

The council described Gachagua’s comments as reckless and dangerous, warning that such statements could put journalists at serious risk.

In a press statement released on Thursday, December 4, MCK expressed concern over the potential consequences of a senior political figure singling out a reporter.

The council noted that public attacks like these could incite violence and create an unsafe environment for media practitioners.

“Singling out a journalist by name constitutes incitement and places him in grave personal danger,” the statement said.

MCK emphasized that journalists play a key role in providing information to the public and should be able to carry out their work without fear of intimidation or harm.

The council highlighted that attacks on the media are particularly worrying as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

During election periods, the media is crucial in informing citizens and ensuring transparency, and any threat to reporters undermines the democratic process.

MCK called on all political leaders to exercise restraint and respect journalists’ work, stressing that public figures have a responsibility to avoid statements that could endanger lives.

The council urged politicians to engage with the media professionally and to focus on constructive criticism rather than personal attacks.

The statement also reminded the public and media houses of their role in protecting journalists.

MCK urged media organizations to continue safeguarding their staff while upholding ethical standards in reporting.

By condemning the attack, MCK sent a clear message that intimidation of journalists will not be tolerated.

The council reiterated that a free and safe press is vital for democracy and warned that reckless comments from influential figures could have far-reaching consequences.
