High Court has issued orders temporarily stopping the construction of the Sh11 billion Riruta-Lenana-Ngong commuter line.

The decision comes as the court prepares to hear a petition challenging the project, which is scheduled for February 11.

The commuter line was planned to improve transport for residents in the affected areas, offering a faster and more efficient way to travel.

However, the project has faced opposition from some members of the public who raised concerns about its approval process and possible impacts on the environment and local communities.

In response to the concerns, the High Court said it will pause the construction until the petition is fully heard and decided. This means that all work on the commuter line must stop for now.

The court’s temporary orders are meant to prevent any further progress that could affect the outcome of the case.

The petitioners argued that the project was approved without following the correct legal and administrative steps.

They claimed that the approval process did not involve proper consultation with the public and that some required documents were missing.

They also raised concerns about the possible effects on the environment and the lives of people living near the proposed route.

The government, on the other hand, has maintained that the commuter line is an important project that will ease traffic congestion and improve transport for residents.

Officials said the project is part of the government’s plan to modernize transport infrastructure in Nairobi and its surrounding areas.

The High Court’s decision to halt construction has been welcomed by those who oppose the project, as it allows more time for the issues to be properly reviewed.

They believe the court’s intervention is necessary to ensure that the project is carried out in a fair and transparent manner.
