SHA Warns Against Illegal Charges for Primary Healthcare Medicines

Social Health Authority (SHA) has raised serious concerns after receiving reports that some health facilities are demanding unlawful fees for Primary Healthcare Care (PHC) medicines.

The authority said this practice is wrong because all PHC services and prescribed drugs are fully covered under the SHA scheme.

In a statement, SHA reminded the public that the PHC package is meant to provide essential health services to all Kenyans.

The package covers basic health needs, including consultation, treatment, and medicines that are prescribed by qualified health workers.

This means that patients should not be asked to pay extra money for PHC drugs when they are receiving care under the SHA scheme.

The authority said that PHC services are designed to be affordable and accessible, especially for people in rural areas and low-income families.

By covering the cost of medicines and basic services, SHA aims to reduce the financial burden on patients and encourage more people to seek medical help when they need it.

SHA further warned that demanding illegal fees is not only unfair but also breaks the rules set under the scheme.

The authority said it will take action against any facility or staff member found charging patients unlawfully.

This could include disciplinary measures or legal steps, depending on the severity of the offence.

The authority urged Kenyans to report any case where they are asked to pay extra for PHC medicines or services.

SHA said that it has systems in place to receive complaints and investigate them quickly.

The authority stressed that patients have the right to receive care without being exploited.

SHA also called on health facilities to follow the guidelines and ensure that their staff understands what is covered under the scheme.

The authority said that health workers should be trained to provide correct information to patients and avoid creating confusion.
