Huge fire has broken out at Yare Plaza in Eastleigh, Nairobi, causing panic and confusion as fears grow that hundreds of people could be trapped inside the building.

The blaze, which started during the day, quickly spread through parts of the busy commercial building.

Thick black smoke could be seen rising high into the sky, visible from different parts of the city.

Flames were seen bursting through windows as the fire continued to spread, leaving many residents and business owners in shock.

Photos and videos shared online, including those obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, show the building surrounded by heavy smoke.

The images paint a worrying picture, with large sections of the structure covered in flames.

In some clips, people can be seen standing near windows on the upper floors, desperately looking for ways to escape.

Some of those trapped inside reportedly used cables and ropes to climb down from the higher floors to nearby buildings.

Videos show individuals carefully sliding down to safety as crowds gathered below, watching in fear.

The risky escape attempts highlight the level of danger many people inside the building were facing.

Eastleigh, known for its busy streets and vibrant business activity, quickly turned chaotic as news of the fire spread.

The area is usually crowded with shoppers, traders, and vehicles, but the situation became even more tense as emergency responders tried to access the scene.

Traffic in and around the area slowed to a near standstill, with both vehicles and pedestrians struggling to move.

Witnesses said the smoke was overwhelming and could be felt from several blocks away.

Some nearby businesses were forced to close as a precaution, while others rushed to move goods to safer areas.

Residents living in surrounding buildings watched helplessly as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

Emergency teams, including firefighters and police officers, arrived at the scene to try and control the fire and assist those trapped.

However, the narrow streets and heavy congestion in Eastleigh made rescue efforts more challenging.

Authorities urged members of the public to keep away from the area to allow emergency services to operate without interference.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire or how many people were inside the building when it started. Officials are expected to conduct investigations once the situation is brought under control.

There are also concerns about possible injuries, though details remain limited as rescue efforts continue.
